Fashion Desk: 2013 Billboard Music Awards
The 2013 Billboard Music Awards used a blue carpet for celebrity arrivals instead of the traditional red. Unfortunately that rather surprising carpet choice was an indicator of too great a departure from the glamour of past years. Last year, the gowns were certainly more modest. There were so many looks last night that were so appallingly immodest and skimpy that I don’t even want to repost the pictures of them. The blue carpet of this year was no match for the white carpet of last year’s show!
Rosie and Sophia Grace
These little princesses always look so cute! I love their pink dresses. All the details of their outfits from their tiaras to their ruffled socks and pink Mary Janes look so sweet.
Amber Rose in Gucci
The shape of this dress is really interesting. It looks funky and edgy without being too revealing. I do think that a belt, brooch or even a great statement necklace would have made this outfit even better.
Hayden Panettiere in Heritage Halston Dress
This dress is so lovely! It’s simple, modest and elegant. Her hair and makeup look great, too. I really love her adorable gold Jimmy Choo purse.
Taylor Swift in Zuhair Murad
Taylor is my best-dressed woman of the evening! I love the beautiful electric blue of this dress. It’s short and fun without being too revealing. The sheer insets and texture make the dress very interesting. Her hair and makeup look great, too. Great job, Taylor!
Kelly Rowland in Rami Al Ami Couture
The texture and color of this dress looks like bubble wrap. The seam up the front is very unflattering.
Jennifer Nettles in Edition by Georges Chakra
The color of this dress is very unflattering and just isn’t pretty. The metallic embroidery inset looks tacky. The fit of the dress is also just too tight. I know she’s wanting to show off her post-baby body, but too-tight clothes (check out the buckling that’s happening all over this gown) are never flattering.
Miley Cyrus in Balmain
A checkerboard and crochet jumpsuit? This outfit looks like a bad circus costume and is very unflattering. However, at least she’s more covered up here than she’s been on many recent occasions.
I love lace dresses, but something is off with the shape of this dress. The pattern of the lace, cap sleeves, high-neck and asymmetrical hem when combined make the look appear askew. I usually love to see a pop of color added to an outfit. But, these pink shoes really don’t work with this outfit.
Emmy Rossum in Zuhair Murad
I love the sheer polka dot accent fabric on this dress. But, something about too many panels and the keyhole make the dress feel slightly off-balance. The fabric is pooled too heavily at the bottom and looks like a pedestal. Her hair, makeup and jewelry look wonderful!
The Billboard Music Awards are always a fun, crazy event for menswear. This year wasn’t that great. There was a lot of black, both worn well and horribly, and not enough use of socks!
Chad Kroeger- Dressing in all black is a big trend this year, and no one did it better than this rock veteran I love the seams and pockets on the black leather jacket.
David Guetta and Akon- They both look great in almost matching black looks. The jackets really show off their different personalities, and it really works well.
Miguel- This singer looks good, opting to keep it simple in all black with a small accent at the neck.
Florida Georgia Line- These guys look great here! Everything fits just right, and is not too overdone. I especially like the grey shirt and tie with the black vest. I don’t even mind the wallet chains.
David Arquette- This outfit isn’t so much bad as it is out of place. The shoes are a little weird, but otherwise it seems much too formal.
Ed Sheeran- This all black look doesn’t work because I can’t tell he’s coming to an award show. It’s too casual even for these awards.
Gabriel Mann- This is just too much. The blue shirt with the black jacket and vest, something in the pocket of the jacket, and pants with some kind of design on them give the eye no indication of where to look. He also didn’t wear socks.
SkyBlu- This half of the now officially defunct LMFAO hasn’t changed his fashion cues at all with his new solo routine. The self-promotional knit cap would have been bad enough, but did he have to wear such garish house slippers, and without socks?
Mike Tyson- This almost works. I like the color combination, and I would probably wear that shirt, but it’s too tight.
Will.i.am- When everyone else is dressing in black will.i.am mixes it up and looks pretty good in this most white outfit. My only problem here is with the shoes, but at least he wore socks!
